Fridell Shines on Day Two at GTech Invite

ATLANTA – Behind a dominant individual performance from sophomore My Fridell, the Miami Hurricanes swimming team continued its momentum Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

“I’m really proud of our team’s performance,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “They are showing great discipline in all aspects – from warm-up to race execution to mental approach, and it’s resulting in our best meet so far this year.”

Fridell earned the No. 1 overall seed in the 100 fly finals after touching the wall in an NCAA “B” cut time and a career-best mark of 54.49 seconds during the morning preliminaries. She managed to outdo herself later Saturday evening, posting her second straight “B” cut time and capturing first place for the Hurricanes in 53.70 seconds.

The night started off well for the Canes, who received a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Miami’s entry, comprised of sophomore Tiffany Sudarma, junior Amy Wiley, Fridell and freshman Angela Algee, touched the wall in a time of 1:43.63.

Even with a first-place showing from her teammate Fridell in the 100 fly, Algee continued her impressive personal stretch with a sixth-place finish in the “A” final of the same event. The Orlando, Fla., native, who also performed well during Friday’s opening events, finished in a time of 56.40 seconds.

Freshman Julia Schippert and Wiley earned Miami points in the “A” final of the 200 breast, finishing in seventh (1:04.11) and ninth (1:04.51), respectively. A sixth-place finish from the 800 free relay team, made up of freshman Cameron Davis, sophomore Alejandra Gonzalez, junior Meghan Murphy and freshman Paige Anderson, saw Miami end the night in sixth place.

“Obviously the highlight has been My winning the 100 fly, but there have been a lot of other great swims too,” Kershaw said. “I can’t wait to see our final day.”

The Hurricane swimmers have compiled 282.5 points after two days of action from the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

Sunday’s final day of competition will consist of 9 a.m. preliminaries and 3 p.m. finals, which can be seen live on RamblinWreck.com.
