Solid Performance by MTennis at USTA/ITA

ATLANTA – The University of Miami men’s tennis team continued play at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships today at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on the Georgia Tech campus.

The Canes had a full day of play that started with a win by Omar Aly defeating UCF’s Chris Barrus, 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation singles Round of 32. Henrique Tsukamoto followed Aly’s footsteps by securing a win in two sets (6-4, 6-2) against Yannick Zuern of UNF, in the main draw’s Round of 32.

In other main draw matches, William Albanese was defeated by FSU’s Michael Rinaldi, 6-2, 6-0. Diego Soto stumbled his first set, but came back strong with a win against Jack Findel-Hawkins of UNF, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. Wilfredo Gonzalez got tripped up on in his second set, but picked up his game to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 against Robert Schulze of Georgia State. Despite his best efforts, Gabriel Flores was overcome by Cristian Gonzalez of FSU, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In the main draw singles Round of 16, all three Canes fought, but came up short in their matches. Tsukamoto lost 6-2, 6-3, to FSU’s No. 116 Benjamin Lock, Soto was overtaken by Elliott Orkin of UF, 6-4, 6-2, and Jordi Vives of FGCU defeated Gonzalez 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Omar Aly participated in the consolation singles Round of 32 and had a easy win against UCF’s Chris Barrus, 6-1, 6-2. Moving on in the consolation singles Round of 16, Aly was overtaken by Albert Cordina Sala of Georgia Southern by default.

The consulation doubles Round of 16 took place today as well. Partners Jack Murphy and Albanese were overcome by Carlos Benito and Casey Kay of Georgia Tech by default. The duo of Flores and Soto moved on to the quarterfinals against Oliver Snaider and Austin Emmet of Mercer by default. They unfortunately fell the same way to Colin Edwards and Anish Sharma of Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals.

Miami now returns to Coral Gables to prepare for the FGCU Invitational, Oct. 25-27 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
