Gonzalez Named to All-ACC Academic Team
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami sophomore Wilfredo Gonzalez has been selected for the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis All-ACC Academic Team, as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John Swofford.
Gonzalez, who is majoring in economics at UM, posted a team-best 16-9 singles record with a 5-5 ledger in ACC matches this season. He recorded a 12-1 singles record in home matches, and was the only player of the 2012-13 season to defeat a ranked singles player.
Clemson senior Yannick Maden was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
The All-ACC Academic Team boasts 12 student-athletes that earned All-ACC recognition in 2013, while four of those student-athletes are repeat All-ACC Academic team selections, including two three-time honorees in Clemson’s Maden and Duke’s Chris Mengel.
Nine ACC institutions are recognized on this year’s team, led by Duke with five selections. Clemson and Virginia Tech each followed with three apiece, while Florida State, NC State and Virginia each had two student-athletes recognized, and Georgia Tech, Miami and North Carolina each landed one student-athlete on the team.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
