No. 6 Women's Tennis Completes Win Over UNF

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The sixth-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team needed only 45 seconds to conclude its delayed match against UNF on Saturday, advancing to the NCAA tournament’s second round at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Rain washed away any chance of completing the match on Friday evening, but that didn’t affect UM sophomore Lina Lilekite. The nation’s 105th-ranked player needed only two serves to complete her 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Osprey’s Marina Cunningham.

“You’re two points away from winning the match,” said Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. But, you still have to win… the girls did what they were supposed to do and they will be back in an hour to get ready for one o’clock.”

Before the delay, the Hurricanes (21-5) claimed the doubles point for the 22nd time this season. Brittany Dubins and Stephanie Wagner remained a perfect 4-0 as a team after a late-season switched paired them together. The duo cruised to an 8-4 win over the UNF combo of Taylor Hollander and Marina Cunningham at No. 3.

Melissa Bolivar and Kelsey Laurente clinched the point with their 8-3 victory on Court No. 2. The win was the 14th doubles victory on the season for the tandem, tying them for the most on the team this season.

Miami’s second point came on Court 5 as Monique Albuquerque overpowered UNF’s Melanie Aguirre, 6-1, 6-0. The win improved the sophomore’s record in her last 10 matches to 8-2.

Freshman Clementina Riobueno gave the Canes a 3-0 edge with her team-leading 23rd win of the season. This time the 102nd-ranked player used a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over the Osprey’s Hollander.

The match was delayed once previously due to lightning. That delay lasted 58 minutes.

With the win, the Hurricanes have only a few hours before they face the 30th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers at 1 p.m.
Purdue overcame a 3-0 deficit to earn a 4-3 victory over No. 34 South Carolina in Friday’s first opening round game.

“I think Purdue is really good,” said Yaroshuk-Tews. “I think they’re tough… they stuck it out and played longer points than I expect from a team not used to these conditions, so we have got to be ready for a tough team.”

The temperature is forecasted to be 85 degrees and sunny at 1 p.m.
