Canes Track Wins on Day 2 at Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Miami track and field program had another strong showing at Penn Relays.
One day after opening up competition with Lea Johnson’s Top-3 finish in women’s hammer, Miami had another thrower finish atop the podium in his event.
Isaiah Simmons win the college division championship in the men’s discus with a mark of 175’ 8”. The redshirt freshman also competed in the men’s shot put, finishing sixth with a throw of 60’ 3”.
Amber Monroe also had a good day throwing for the Hurricane women. The sophomore placed sixth in the women’s discus with a throw of 158’ 9”. Monroe finished ahead of three other competitors from the ACC.
“Isaiah, Lea and Amber are becoming more consistent as the season progress,” Miami director of track & field and cross country Amy Deem said. “I am pleased with how they look as we prepare for NCAAs.”
Miami’s throwers were just two of several Canes to have impressive performances Friday.
The Hurricane women placed third in the sprint medley championship. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Balkwill, sophomore Jokira Jiles, sophomore Taneisha Cordell and junior Alaine Tate combined to run the medley in 3:50.72.
Three jumpers placed in the Top-10 of the men’s long jump. Sophomore Innocent Jacob led the trio, placing third with a mark of 23’ 5.25”. Freshman John-Patrick Friday was sixth with a personal-best mark of 22’ 9.25”, while sophomore Timothy Richardson placed 10th with a mark of 22’ 8”.
Senior Samantha Williams also cracked the Top-10 in the women’s triple jump. The All-American finished 10th, clearing 38’ 4”.
