Todd Widom (2002-03)

Coral Gables, Fla. –  Following his outstanding freshman season, head coach Bryan Getz described Todd Widom as “one of the most dominant players in college tennis. He has the ability to hurt his opponents from both the forehand and backhand sides and mentally is beyond his years.” Born in Coral Gables, Fla., Widom stepped foot on the Coral Gables campus as a former state finalist at No. 1 singles and as a member of the Sun-Sentinal All-County First-Team. In high school, Widom earned his team’s Most Valuable Player honors. In 1996, he was the nationally ranked No. 4 player in boy’s 16 and an in 2001 was No. 3 in the USTA boy’s 18 division. In tournament play, Widom captured National Men’s Open Clay singles and doubles titles, the 2001 Gator Bowl tournament title, placed third in the 2001 Kalamzoo tournament and placed fifth in the 2001 Easter Bowl tournament.

As a freshman, Widom, who played the entire season nationally ranked and out of the No. 1 position, compiled an overall singles record of 28-7 including his appearance in the third round of the 2002 NCAA tournament. In doubles competition, Widom compiled an overall mark of 12-15. His four regular season loses came at the hands of ranked opponents. On his home court, Widom compiled an impressive 10-1 record. With a 6-2,7-5 win over No. 14 Javier Taborga of Notre Dame, Widom was named the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Tournament. For his outstanding freshman performance, Widom earned his team’s MVP honors and All-American honors. Widom became the first Hurricane since then-freshman Michael Russell to earn All-American honors.

Widom followed up his impressive freshman season with an equally impressive sophomore season. Playing the entire season out of the No. 1 spot, Widom compiled an overall singles record of 27-9 including an appearance in the fifth round of the NCAA tournament. Teaming primarily with Eric Hechtman, Widom compiled an overall record of 13-8 in doubles play. For the second straight season, Widom and the rest of the Miami Hurricanes claimed the BIG EAST title, Widom was named as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and Widom earned All-American honors.

After two All-American seasons at the University of Miami, Widom turned pro. After six professional years, Widom retired due to injury. Upon retirement, Widom opened up his own tennis academy where he passes on his knowledge of the game to those with the desire to fulfill their dreams and goals.
