Men's Track Earns ACC Academic Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three members of the University of Miami men’s track and field program were named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Team for Indoor Track and Field.

Bassim El-Sabawi, Timothy Richardson and Anthony Wolliston each earned a spot among the conference’s brightest student-athletes. They joined fellow Hurricanes Lindsi Arrington, Jamika Glades and Lea Johnson, who earned 2013 All-ACC Academic honors for women’s indoor track and field.

“We are extremely proud of the six student-athletes that have excelled not only on the track, but in the classroom,” said Amy Deem, Miami’s director of track & field and cross country. “The ability to balance academics and athletics is the first step in achieving success in life.”

The men’s All-ACC Academic Team consisted of 42 student-athletes, with at least one honoree coming from each of the conference’s 11 participating member institutions. Maryland did not field a men’s indoor track & field team. To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

El-Sabawi, a junior sprinter, earned All-ACC Academic honors for the second consecutive year. The San Diego, Calif., native ran his best 60m time of the season, 6.99 seconds, at the ACC Indoor Championships. El-Sabawi also competed in the 200m for Miami, posting a season-best 22.29 at the New Mexico Classic. A chemistry major, El-Sabawi has earned a 3.958 GPA while being a major contributor for the Hurricanes track and field program.

Richardson, a sophomore jumper, set a personal best in the long jump in the 2013 indoor season. The Orlando, Fla., native posted a mark of 7.13m at the ACC Indoor Championships, surpassing his previous high mark by .11 meters. Richardson, who also competed in the triple jump for the Canes, has earned a 3.2 GPA and is an Arts & Sciences major.

Wolliston, a sophomore sprinter, competed in the 400m dash for the Hurricanes during the 2013 indoor season. The Snellville, Ga., native ran a career-best 49.10 at the Kentucky Invitational this season.  A biomedical engineering major, Wolliston sports a 3.304 GPA while consistently contributing on the track for the Canes.

El-Sabawi, Richardson and Wolliston join Diego Rosado (2009) as Hurricanes who have earned All-ACC Academic honors for men’s indoor track & field.
