Six Canes to Compete at NCAA S&D Championship

INDIANAPOLIS — Six representatives from the University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team have made the trip to Indianapolis for the 2013 NCAA Division I Championship, a three-day event hosted by the IU Natatorium and the IUPUI Sports Complex.

Swimmers Celeste Degen, Sofia Johansson and Lucy Worrall, alongside divers Carrie Dragland, Lindsay Lester and Kara McCormack, will be competing for All-American status and the chance to etch their names in University of Miami history.

The three qualifiers for the swimming portion of the Championship represent the most ever under head coach Christie Shefchunas, now in her seventh year at the helm of the program.

Johansson will be competing in her second consecutive NCAA postseason. The Sweden native, who captured her third straight gold medal at the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in the 100-Yard Breaststroke, will be looking to attain her first-ever All-American status.

Fellow senior Celeste Degen will be participating in her first NCAA postseason. The Hudson, Fla., native, who qualified via the Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet hosted by the University of Georgia, will battle it out in her signature event, the 50-Yard Freestyle.

Worrall will also competing in her first NCAA postseason. The Vicars Cross, England native, who broke the ACC record in the 100-Yard Butterfly in Greensboro, was one of only 72 swimmers to earn an NCAA “A” cut time, automatically qualifying her for the postseason.

All three active divers qualified for NCAA’s with strong showings at Zone B qualifying at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Dragland took fourth in the three-meter event, Lester took fourth in the one-meter, while McCormack captured first in the platform event. Their strong individual performances in Knoxville put them over the automatic qualifying threshold, as all three punched tickets for the postseason.
