MTennis to Host Georgia State on Friday
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In its finale of a six-match home stand, the No. 65 University of Miami men’s tennis team will play its last scheduled non-conference opponent, hosting Georgia State on Friday, March 22 at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
After splitting a pair of conference matches last week, Miami (11-5, 1-1 ACC) grabbed a thrilling 4-3 win over No. 53 Minnesota on March 19.
After dropping the doubles point, the Hurricanes presented a stiff challenge in singles play and grabbed wins from the No. 2, No. 3 No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions. Omar Aly grabbed the match-clinching point on court four with a third set tiebreaker victory over Minnesota’s Jack Hamburg, winning 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Freshman William Albanese, playing at sixth singles, notched the Hurricanes’ first point of the afternoon with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Minnesota’s Ruben Weber. Friday’s victory made Albanese second on the team in singles wins with 11 on the dual season.
Wilfredo Gonzalez continued his strong sophomore campaign with his fifth consecutive win, downing Mathieu Froment 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Gonzalez has been solid all season and leads the team with 12 singles wins on the season.
Diego Soto ended his three-match singles skid with a tough three set victory over Leandro Toledo on court two, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, setting up teammate Aly for his match-clinching win on court four.
Gabriel Flores, playing in his second match at No. 1 singles this season, dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Minnesota’s Rok Bonin, ending a five match winning streak for the junior right hander. Minnesota’s Juan Pablo Ramirez earned a hard fought victory over Miami’s Marco Stancati, edging out the junior in straight sets 7-6, 6-4.
While Georgia State has had a solid season at home, posting a 6-2 record, the Panthers have struggled on the road with a 1-3 record so far this season.
Robert Schulze highlights Georgia State’s singles lineup, playing primarily from the fourth and fifth positions and boasting a 10-4 record on the dual season. Lucas Santa Ana and Victor Valente make up the Panther’s primary No. 1 doubles team and has gone undefeated on the season with a perfect 12-0 record.
