Simmons, Tate Lead T&F at ACC Indoor Finals
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Isaiah Simmons’ incredible freshman seasonjust got even better.
Simmons,who broke Miami’s nearly 12-year old indoor shot put record earlier thisseason, can now call himself an ACC champion. The redshirt freshman’s throw of58′ 1.75″ earned him a spot atop the rankings at the ACC Indoor Championshipsat Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.
AlaineTate led the women’s team, wrapping up her big weekend at the ACC IndoorChampionships with a second place finish in the women’s 800m run. The juniortransfer, who posted a time of 2:07.54 in Saturday’s final, set a Miami recordin the women’s 800m run during preliminaries, posting a time of 2.06.09. TeammateTaneisha Cordell ran the 800m final in 2:11.51, earning the sophomore a sixthplace finish.
Tate andCordell were also part of Miami’s 4x400m relay team that placed third at theACC Indoor Championships. They joined freshman Jamika Glades and sophomoreJokira Jiles to finish the relay in 3:40.07. Glades finished seventh overall in thewoman’s 60m hurdles (8.64 seconds), while Jiles finished eighth in the women’s200m (24.60 seconds).
AlyssaMcClure ran the women’s 60m dash in 7.36 seconds to finish third in theevent. The junior also finishedfifth in the women’s 200m final with a time of 24.20 seconds.
Sophomore Amber Monroe placed seventh overall in the finals of thewoman’s shot put with a throw of 44′ 6.75″, setting a personal record.
Lindsi Arrington placed eighth overall in the woman’s mile finalwith a time of 4:54.95. The junior improved nearly five seconds from herpreliminary time of 4:59.47. Arrington also ran the women’s 3000m in 10:17.42.
Beyond Simmons, other men’s athletes that stood out included freshmenJohn-Patrick Friday and Timothy Richardson in the men’s triple jump. Fridayfinished fifth with a jump of 48′ 3.25″, while Richardson placed eighth with ajump of 46′ 11.5″.
Christian Cook and TeQuille Jackson placed sixth and eighth,respectively, in the men’s 60m hurdles final. Cook, a sophomore, finished in8.04 seconds while Jackson, a freshman, posted a time of 8.19 seconds.
Cook joined freshman Phillip Dorsett, junior Bassim El-Sabawi and sophomoreAnthony Wolliston on the men’s 4×400 relay team. The group placed sixth,posting a time of 3:17.02.
Miami’s women finished eighth among the 12 ACC schools with 42points, while the men’s team placed ninth among 11 teams with 31 points. Maryland’smen’s team did not compete at the ACC Indoor Championships.
