Miami Women's Athletics Brunch a Success
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami recognized the success of the its women’s sports programs Sunday with a “Celebrations of Women’s Athletics” Brunch.
The event, held in the BankUnited Center Multipurpose Room, featured coaches and staff from all of our nine women’s sports programs, alumni, friends and donors.
Speakers at the event included, President Donna E. Shalala, Director of Athletics Blake James, Senior Associate AD/SWA Jennifer Strawley, head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier.
“The support of our alumni, friends and the campus community is essential to the success of our female student-athletes and coaches,” Strawley said. “The brunch provided a wonderful forum to celebrate the athletic and academic success or our student-athletes.”
More than 120 loyal supporters were in attendance for the program and each were treated to brunch before heading over to the BankUnited Center to see the women’s basketball team move a step closer to its third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
Since joining the ACC, Miami women’s athletics has reached new heights. Below are a few shining examples:
- Volleyball – 2012 ACC Regular Season Champions, four straight NCAA tournament appearances.
- Track and Field – Four ACC Team Championships; Lauren Williams, Krista Simkins, Ti’erra Brown, Murielle Ahoure race to NCAA Championships; Amy Deem named head coach of 2012 USA Olympic Team.
- Soccer – Back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, upset No. 1 Florida State on last minute goal in 2012, first-ever NCAA tournament win in 2011.
- Golf – Rika Park and Leticia Ras-Anderica competed individually at the 2012 NCAA Central Regional, three All-ACC selections: Tina Miller (2005), Josie Shinn (2005) and Maria Salinas (2011).
- Basketball – Back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, two All-America selections (Shenise Johnson, Riquna Williams), three straight 20-win seasons, Katie Meier named the 2011 AP National Coach of the Year.
- Tennis – NCAA Individual Champion (Audra Cohen – 2006), four-straight NCAA Elite Eight appearances, 17 All-America selections.
- Rowing – Hannah Hawks name ACC Freshman of the Year in 2012, Breanna Hayton 2012 All-ACC team and named a 2012 CRCA Scholar-Athlete, Katalin Horvath 2011 and 2012 All-ACC team.
- Swimming and Diving – Kelsi Hall named All-America in 2012, Brittany Viola qualified for 2012 USA Olympic Team, Sofia Johansson became first woman in ACC history to swim 100 breast stroke in under one minute at 2012 ACC Championships.
