Diving Finishes Day One at Bruin Invitational
LOS ANGELES — The University of Miami diving team wrapped up day one of competition at the Bruin Diving Invitational in impressive fashion Friday afternoon, as a pair of divers placed at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
Sophomore Kara McCormack took sixth in the three-meter event with a score of 276.20. She was one of only 18 divers to qualify for the finals. Lindsay Lester and Carrie Dragland both finished their preliminary rounds in the top half of the 54 entrants, but came just short of qualifying.
Freshman Tanner Wilfong took seventh in the men’s one-meter event, finishing with an impressive score of 559.30. Wilfong is the lone University of Miami representative in the men’s events this weekend.
Miami is one of 17 teams competing in the event, joined by: hosts UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Cal Poly, California, Fresno State, Kansas, San Diego, San Diego State, San Jose State, Stanford, Tulane, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, USC and Wisconsin.
The Hurricanes return to the pool Saturday for day two of competition. Preliminary rounds for the women’s one-meter event and the men’s three-meter event will begin at 11 a.m. The finals start at 12:30 p.m. (men’s three-meter) and 2 p.m. (women’s one-meter), respectively.
Miami will wrap up its trip to Los Angeles on Sunday with the platform diving events. The women’s platform competition commences at 9:30 a.m. with the prelims. After the field is cut to 12, the final will start at 11:30 a.m. The men’s platform starts at 12:30 p.m., with the 12-person final beginning at 1:55 p.m.
