Hannah Hawks Wins ACC Freshman of the Year

April 22, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla.—Hannah Hawks, a true freshman from Mooresville, N.C., won the title of ACC Freshman of the Year at this year’s ACC Championships in Clemson, S.C. on April 21.

“Hannah has been a fantastic team member this year and I think she’s an excellent representative of her freshman classmates,” said Head Coach Andrew Carter. “She parked herself in our top crew and never once showed any intention of losing that spot.”

Hawks raced on Miami’s 1V boat, which posted a time of 6:49.6 and finished fourth after Virginia, Clemson and Duke.

“Her crew’s race today was quite solid and another step forward for a very young squad,” added Carter. “It’s great to watch how intensely they pursue their improvement within the conference.”

Breanna Hayton, a sophomore from Victoria, British Columbia and another member of the 1V crew, was named to the All-ACC Rowing team. She was the sole student-athlete from Miami to earn the honor.

Miami finished sixth overall at the championship race, totaling 17 points behind North Carolina. The No. 1-ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers captured the title of ACC Champion for the twelfth time in 13 years, with Clemson being the only other team to win the title in 2009.

Miami also competed in the Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 8+ races. In the First Varsity Four, the Canes posted a time of 8:31.0 and finished sixth behind Boston College. In the 2V the team finished with a time of 7:25.4, taking sixth place behind North Carolina.

“There’s great chemistry among these women and they’re a pleasure to coach. I’m as excited as they are about both the short and long-term future for Miami Rowing,” concluded Carter.

On May 12 and May 13 the Canes travel to Philadelphia to compete in the Dad Vail Regatta, their final race of the 2012 season.
