MIAMI BEACH, Fla.– The University of Miami rowing team concluded its preseason scrimmage schedule against the University of Connecticut on Saturday, March 17 on Indian Creek in Miami Beach, Fla. The race was UM’s final tune-up before opening the 2012 season at the San Diego Classic in San Diego, Calif.

In the first event of the day, the 1V8+ got off to an early lead on the Huskies and built on it throughout the 2000m.  The 2V8+ event was a little more eventful with the ‘Canes 2V also jumping out to an early lead.  However, UConn showed good patience and took over the lead just past the halfway point.  Finally, the Novice 8+ event was the mirror of the 1V8+ with UConn taking the early lead and stretching it over the course of the race.

“The scrimmage went very well with full 2000m racing over three events, the 1V8+, 2V8+, and Novice 8+,” said Head Coach Andrew Carter. “As both programs prepare for their season openers in two weeks, the opportunity to race on a buoyed course was an excellent final tune-up.  The conditions were great with a nice head-breeze but very little chop on the water.”

The San Diego Classic takes place on March 31 and April 1. For more information on the University of Miami rowing team, please log on to www.hurricanesports.com. Once there, you will find up-to-date news, results and information regarding the Hurricanes rowing program.
