Miami’s Defense vs. No. 4/5 ArizonaMiami forced No. 4/5 Arizona into 16 turnovers while swiping 14 steals from the Wildcats on Dec. 23. Shane Larkin led the UM charge with six steals, followed by three from Durand Scott. Miami averages 7.7 steals per game and forces opponents into 13.6 turnovers each outing.
UM’s Offensive OutputFour players – Durand Scott, Shane Larkin, Reggie Johnson – are averaging double-digit points this season and one – Trey McKinney Jones – is at 9.9 ppg. When three or more Canes score in double digits, Miami is 8-1. In six games this year, four or more Hurricanes have scored in double digits.
New Starting Five for MiamiCoach L used his fifth different starting lineup of the season on Dec. 22, giving the nod to Shane Larkin, Durand Scott, Rion Brown, Kenny Kadji and Julian Gamble. Larranaga used the lineup again on Dec. 23 against No. 4/5 Arizona. Reggie Johnson was out for the games with an injured left thumb and Trey McKinney Jones was slowed by a systemic illness for the first game of the tournament.
Canes in the PollsMiami is receiving votes in national polls for the fifth week this season, as of Dec. 17. Miami was listed on both the AP and USA TODAY preseason polls for the first time since the 2008-09 season, when UM was ranked 17 and 16, respectively. In 2005-06 Miami was receiving votes in both preseason polls, with 16 from the AP and six in the USA TODAY listing.
Scott is Mr. ConsistentIn all seven of his games this season, Durand Scott has scored at least 15 points. He has hit a pair of threes in each of the last three games and has recorded at least four assists in four of the last five games. Scott posted his first double-double of the season (third of his career) with 16 points and 12 rebounds against Charlotte.
Larkin Improves in Year TwoSophomore Shane Larkin has drastically improved his scoring in his second year with the Canes, averaging 14.0 ppg through 10 games. A season ago, he was only posting 7.7 points per night through 10 games.
