Behind Enemy Lines: UCF
Behind Enemy Lines is a weekly feature on HurricaneSports.com, highlighting the passion of Miami fans in opposing team territory. And if you’re reading this from Atlanta, GA, give us a shout at @HurricaneSports – we want to hear from you.
This week’s Cane “Behind Enemy Lines” is …
Chris Rodriguez | Orlando, Fla.
How did you become a Hurricanes fan?“My first game ever as a little kid was a UM/UF game. My uncle was a huge supporter so I grew up a Miami fan. My love for “The U” has only grown stronger over the years and I consider myself one of the biggest Canes fans around.”
Do you find it difficult supporting Miami while living in Orlando?“Yes, I’m constantly called a bandwagon fan or a sell-out for being a Miami fan but attending UCF. There is not a lot of love around campus for someone who doesn’t root for the Knights but that hasn’t affected my allegiance to the Canes. I’m proud to support Miami.”
Is there a place you visit to watch Hurricanes games in the city?“I mostly have fellow fans come over to my apartment to watch or we head to Buffalo Wild Wings on game day. I try not to miss any games though. Whether I am watching at home or somewhere else, I am always watching.”
Have you found any other Hurricanes fans at UCF?“I feel like a good amount of UCF students are from Miami so there are PLENTY of Hurricanes supporters in central Florida. This may be Knights territory but there are enough Canes up here that you see someone wearing their orange and green almost every day.”
How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Travel for games?“I have hundreds of items of clothing (shirts, jerseys, shorts, sleepwear, letterman jacket, hats, beanies), I have a Canes leather wallet which I’ve had for years, and a keychain. I have attended the UM/FSU game for the past six years now, whether it is in Tallahassee or Miami. I travel to Miami for home games when I can and also have been to the bowl game when they came to Orlando. I am also going to be at the men’s hoops game when they come up here to play UCF. For me, it’s always All About The U!”
Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes basketball fan?“I always liked watching the team play in the NCAA Tournament and can’t wait to see them make a deep run in March. I think this could be the year that we do it!”
