UM Takes 2 of 4 Semis Spots at Bedford Cup
TAMPA – TheUniversity of Miami women’s tennis team starred in the second day of the 2012Florida State Championship, also known as the Bedford Cup, held at USF’s Varsityand P.E. courts this Friday through Sunday.
Florida native Kelsey Laurente continued her impressive runin the tournament as she out-paced Florida State’s Leyla Erkin, 6-1, 6-0.
“Kelsey is proving that she has the potential ofdeveloping into a premier college tennis player,” head coach PaigeYaroshuk-Tews said.
Junior transfer Nicolle Stracar joined Laurente in thesemifinals with a three-set victory over her teammate Lina Lileikite (2-6, 6-2,16-14).
In the singles back draw, Brittany Dubins dispatched, UNF’sHollander, 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles teams of Dubins/Stracar andLileikite/Laurente each advanced to the semifinals and will have theopportunity to face each other in the finals. Dubins and Stracar defeated theMeans twins of Florida Gulf Coast, 8-3, while Lileikite and Laurente downed UCF’sduo of Lorberg/Haraldson, 8-5.
“We need to keep up our intensity heading into tomorrow,Yaroshuk-Tews added. “Tomorrow will be about how tough we are physically. A few players have played a lot of tennis.That is what a season is about. This is only the beginning.”
