CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Shenise Johnson scored 20 points and hit a pair of free throws with 18.2 seconds left to help lift No. 11 Miami to a 56-53 victory over Virginia on Thursday night.
The Cavaliers (14-6, 2-4 ACC) had two chances to tie on their final possession, but guard Ariana Moorer missed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left and a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer from Jazmin Pitts from the corner did not reach the basket.
Moorer led Virginia with 18 points.
Miami (15-3, 6-1) outrebounded Virginia 44-35. Johnson had 12 points in the second half.
Virginia led 33-29 at halftime, but the Cavaliers missed 13 of 24 free throw attempts overall.
POST-GAME NOTES
More Than Any Other Miami’s lineup of Shenise Johnson, Riquna Williams, Stefanie Yderstrom, Morgan Stroman and Sylvia Bullock have started 52 consecutive games – the longest such streak in the nation.
Friendly Foes Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle and Miami’s Katie Meier each played for Duke as student-athletes. The two faced-off against one another after the 2009-10 season in the WNIT Championship game when Boyle was the head coach at Cal. With the addition of Boyle to the ACC coaching ranks, the conference now has four former players that are now coaches, joining Itoro Coleman (coaches and played at Clemson) and Sylvia Crawley (coaches at Boston College and played at North Carolina).
More Than a Box Score Filler With 20 points and 13 rebounds, Shenise Johnson recorder her team-leading fifth double-double of the season. Her 32 career double-doubles are more than another other active player in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
