Hurricanes Resume ACC Play

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After wrapping up the non-conferenceslate at 8-2, the University of Miami volleyball team is set to resume AtlanticCoast Conference play this weekend on a road trip to Virginia and VirginiaTech. The Canes will take on the Cavaliers on Friday at 7 p.m. inside MemorialGymnasium and the Hokies on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.

“We haveseen a lot of great things, but also a lot that we can build on,” head coachNicole Lantagne Welch said regarding the season so far. “We are excited aboutplaying ACC opponents from here on out. Every conference match is competitiveand every venue presents a challenge. You have to play well in order to win.”

UM (9-2,1-0) won two of three at the Louisville Tournament last weekend, with wins overUNLV and Middle Tennessee. Sophomore middle blockers Emani Sims (45 kills, 15total blocks) and Alexis Mourning (40 kills, 18 total blocks) were both namedto the all-tournament team. Currently, the Hurricanes rank first in the ACC asa team in kills (14.71/set), digs (17.88/set) and assists (13.79/set).

TheCanes won their opening league match on Sept. 7 against then-No. 6 FloridaState in front of a record crowd and national television audience (ESPNU) atthe Knight Sports Complex.

Virginia(5-6, 0-1) recently split a pair of matches at the Marriott Cavalier Classic,defeating Liberty and falling to Virginia Tech. Tori Janowski leads the teamwith 132 kills this season, while Emily Rottman has 161 digs. The Cavalierslead the all-time series against Miami, 8-7, but the Canes won both matches in2011.

VirginiaTech (8-3, 1-0) has won seven of its last eight matches and holds a 3-0 recordat Cassell Coliseum heading into the weekend. Samantha Gostling paces theattack with 143 kills and Morgan O’Neill leads with 161 digs. Miami holds a13-5 advantage over VT in the all-time series and has taken the last eight.
