Alex Johnson Named ACC Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami volleyballjunior Alex Johnson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of theWeek, the league office announced Monday. The right side collected 16 kills and16 digs in the Hurricanes’ 3-1 upset win Friday over No. 6 Florida State.
Johnson isthe first Hurricane to win ACC Player of the Week since Lane Carico on Nov. 28,2011.
“Alex issuch a steady player for us,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “She’svery smart out on the court and finds ways to mix up her shots. Against FloridaState, she came through with some big kills at critical moments in the match.This is a well-deserved honor for Alex.”
A PreseasonAll-ACC selection, Johnson led all players with 16 kills in the contest, whilecommitting just three errors for an efficient .342 hitting percentage. TheTallahassee, Fla., native added three total blocks in the victory.
On theseason, Johnson, who has started every match in her career, has racked up 95kills (3.17 k/s) for a .333 hitting percentage. Additionally, she hasregistered four double-doubles in eight matches with 86 total digs (2.87 d/s).
The 3-1victory over the Seminoles marked the highest ranked opponent the Canes hadever defeated. The win, which came in front of a national television audience(ESPNU) and a record crowd at the Knight Sports Complex, improved Miami to 7-1on the season and 1-0 in the ACC.
TheCanes are just outside the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll and will next step out ofconference this weekend to take part in the Louisville Tournament at the KFCYum! Center in Louisville, Ky. UM will face UNLV on Friday before going upagainst Middle Tennessee and No. 12 Louisville on Saturday.
