Grant Signs with Pro Team in Cyprus
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After three years spent competing in orange and green, Malcolm Grant will make the switch to purple and yellow this season with APOEL Nicosia B.C. of the Cypriot First Division A.
“I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to continue my basketball career in Cyprus,” Grant said. “It’s what we all dream of growing up, and it’s what I’ve worked so hard for. I definitely don’t take it for granted.”
Grant, whose 10.8 points per game ranked third on the team in 2011-12, has spoken with former Hurricanes Jack McClinton and Brian Asbury about life overseas. Though he knows international basketball has its fair share of nuances, Grant doesn’t foresee any overwhelming challenges in his personal transition from college student-athlete to the professional ranks.
“I know it’s a lot more physical over there, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Grant said. “In the end, basketball is basketball, and I’m going to work my hardest to be successful.”
The Brooklyn, N.Y. native was an outspoken leader during his three years in Coral Gables, lighting up the crowd with both his three-point shot and his signature ear-to-ear grin. Grant, who was selected to the All-ACC Third Team as a junior in 2010-11, transferred to Miami after spending his freshman season at Villanova. After talking to a former Wildcat teammate about playing in Cyprus, Grant says he’s more excited than nervous when it comes to moving abroad.
“I can’t really be worried or concerned about [the transition], because you have to keep a positive mindset,” Grant said. “This is what it’s all about. I love meeting new people, talking, having fun.”
After a rollercoaster year for Grant that included the passing of his brother and a near miss on an NCAA Tournament berth, the sharpshooter knows all about frustration. Regardless, Grant feels his final year spent in Coral Gables was anything but a disappointment.
“Coach Larranaga taught us a lot in my last year here,” Grant said. “It’s not all about basketball. There’s a lot more to life than just that.”
From what he’s heard about life in Miami compared to life in Cyprus, Grant seems further excited about beginning the next chapter.
“Beautiful weather, beautiful people, delicious food,” Grant said with a laugh. “I just can’t wait to get it all started.”
