CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketballteam travels across the Atlantic Ocean for an 11-day exhibition tour throughSweden and Denmark, August 7-18. Head Coach Ferne Labati and staffwill guide UM against top-Swedish basketball clubs Sodertalje and Visby,plus the six-team Falcon International Tournament in Copenhagen, Denmark.
For the second time this summer Labati and staff will lead a squad ofplayers overseas for international competition. This past June, Labatiheaded up the BIG EAST/Nike Women’s Basketball All-Stars that competedon a five-game tour through Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.That team, with the Hurricanes’ Gina Graziani at point guard, finishedwith a 2-3 record.
The first stop on UM’s exhibition tour will be a familiar one for Hurricaneforward Camilla Östh. The sophomore from Sodertalje, Swedenwill get a chance to play against her old amateur club team, SodertaljeBBC, on August 9 in her hometown.
Before the team heads off to Denmark, they will have a two-game serieswith Visby BBC, August 11-12, in Visby located on the Island of Gotland.
Once in Denmark, the Hurricanes will join the Denmark National Team,Falcon (Denmark), City Basket (Berlin, Germany) and the Denmark Under-20National Team for a round-robin tournament in Copenhagen, August 14-16.
Other than the UM coaching staff and Graziani, seniors Kym Hope andCassaundra Wimes are other UM players who have had international competitionabroad. Hope was a member of the BIG EAST/Nike Women’s BasketballAll-Stars in 1997 that also toured through Denmark and Sweden, while Wimesplayed with Athletes in Action in 1996 touring through Poland and Germany.
