Al Clark’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Hall on the first possession of overtime lifted 21st-ranked Virginia Tech to a dramatic 27-20 victory over Miami in the Big East Conference opener for both teams. The Hurricanes were in a giving mood, turning the ball over on five successive possessions spanning the second and third quarters.Trailing 13-10 at the half, Virginia Tech took a 17-10 lead in the third quarter on a 13-yard run by Al Clark.
Miami retook the lead, 20-17, in the fourth quarter when Scott Covington threw a short out to Reggie Wayne who shook three tacklers and scampered 84 yards for a score.
Covington connected on 13-of-28 for 153 yards and three scores. Wayne hauled in six passes for a career-high 153 yards and two scores. Shayne Graham tied the game with 8:35 remaining in regulation by connecting on a 19-yard field goal.Virginia Tech had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but Graham’s 35-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining sailed wide right.
