Chris Weinke threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, hitting Peter Warrick seven times for 190 yards as the eighth-ranked Seminoles beat Miami, 26-14, in the Orange Bowl.Weinke got things going 8:33 into the game when he connected with Peter Warrick on a 62-yard scoring play. Warrick fumbled away the ball on a punt return after Miami’s ensuing possession, leaving the Hurricanes with the ball at the Florida State 18. Scott Covington hit tight end Daniel Franks on 4th-and-1 to tie the score, 7-7, just 2:33 later.
Weinke then connected with Marvin Minnis on a 23-yard scoring pass three minutes before halftime as Florida State took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.Down 24-7 Kenny Kelly replaced Scott Covington to shake things up in the third quarter, but it had little effect as Miami had trouble moving the ball. Covington came in for another series and Kelly came back to throw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss that cut the deficit to 24-14 with 3:08 remaining.
Covington was 15-of-28 for 165 yards, while Kelly added 75 yards on 3-of-9 passing. Reggie Wayne caught six passes for 54 yards and Moss totaled 94 on three catches. James Jackson led Miami
