CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami football team continued withtwo-a-day workouts today at the Greentree Practice Field in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes worked out in full pads in both the morning and the afternoonsessions.
Head Coach Butch Davis has been encouraged by the Hurricanes’ abilityto fight through the heat and humidity of August in South Florida.
“This is when your mind has to control your body, because it’s easyto surrender through the heat and humidity,” said Davis. “It’s toughto come out and play the game of football in the summertime. I’vechallenged our guys to push themselves every day further than the day beforeand they’re responding and showing courage. By pushing hard in practice,it will enable us to execute in the third and fourth quarters when we’refacing adversity.”
Offensively, Davis continued his praise of tight ends Daniel Franksand Mondriel Fulcher.
“Bubba (Daniel) and Mondriel are a great tandem,” said Davis.”They push each other and they encourage each other. But they alsocompliment each other.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Davis was pleased with the productivityduring the afternoon blitz drills.
‘The defense’s explosion and quickness is very evident,” said Davis.“I was very pleased with the aggressiveness shown in the blitz drills.”
There were no new injuries reported. Sophomore safety Al Bladesworked out in full pads during the afternoon session. He had beenwithheld from the previous two practices as a precautionary measure torest his surgically reconstructed knee. Offensive lineman Richard
Mercier did not practice today after aggravating scar tissue in hisleft knee during yesterday morning’s workout. He is listed as day-to-day.
