CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami Athletic Director PaulDee today announced the appointment of James Sweeney as interim head men’sand women’s swimming coach for the remainder of the academic year.Sweeney has served as assistant swimming coach for the past four years.
During his tenure as assistant swimming coach, the Hurricaneshave won 46 individual BIG EAST titles, five BIG EAST team championshipsand a host of individual NCAA titles. Recently, the women’s swimmingteam posted its first two victories of the season, beating in-state rivalsFlorida State (148-140) and Florida Atlantic (160-80).
Prior to his arrival at Miami, Sweeney served as assistant men’sand women’s swimming coach at the University of Massachusetts from 1992-94.
In each of his two seasons at UMASS, the men’s squad won the New Englandtitle. From 1991-92 Sweeney served as an assistant coach at Bernal’sGator Swim Club.
A 1991 graduate of Indiana University, Sweeney set several schoolswimming records. He was a three-time NCAA All-American in the 1650-yardfreestyle, and a BIG TEN Conference champion in the 500-and 1650-yard freestyle.
He currently holds school records in the 1000-and 1650-yard freestyles.Sweeney has a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degreein sports management.
