Larranaga Inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame

May 18, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga has been inducted into the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Hall of Fame.

Larranaga joins Jack Bruen (Power Memorial), Robert Caputo (Iona Prep), John Hughes (Official), Bill Stetter (Cardinal Hayes, Holy Cross, CHSFL) in the Class of 2012.

The 27th annual CHSAA Hall of Fame Dinner was held May 17 at the Brynwood Golf and Country Club in Armonk, N.Y., but Larranaga was unable to attend the event after undergoing hip surgery earlier in the week.

Larranaga grew up in the Bronx, playing and coaching at Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, N.Y. At the age of 14, Larranaga coached the freshman team to the city championship, his first coaching job. He also starred on the varsity basketball team, graduating in 1967. He then went on to play college basketball at Providence where he graduated as the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer. Larranaga was selected in the sixth round by the Detroit Pistons in the 1971 NBA Draft, but chose to take a coaching job at Davidson with Terry Holland instead of pursuing a career playing professional ball.

CHSAA is made up of Catholic high schools in the New York area and has three sections: New York (Manhattan, Bronx, Westchester and Staten Island); Brooklyn-Queens; and Nassau-Suffolk. It is the largest such Catholic high school athletic league in the United States. Archbishop Molloy currently has an enrollment of 1500 students.
