CORAL GABLES, Fla.—The University of Miami women’s rowing team finished a solid weekend of racing at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River Course in Camden, N.J., with a second place finish in the Varsity 8+ petite final. The Canes also advanced two other boats to Sunday’s finals, including the Second Varsity Eight and the Frosh/Novice Four.
“We had a good weekend with our crews improving in each of the three rounds of racing,” said Head Coach Andrew Carter.
After qualifying for the petite final on Saturday, the 1V competed in their final on Sunday afternoon, posting a time of 6:37.81 and narrowly missing first place by a slim .41-second margin. The Canes finished behind Old Dominion University and ahead of Temple, West Virginia, Drexel and George Mason universities.
The Second Varsity Eight was fourth place in a close race for the C final. They finished with a time of 7:16.01, beating West Virginia University and UNH.
“The two Varsity crews finished the weekend with their best races. The 1V race was a particularly exciting final, coming down to the wire with Old Dominion squeaking ahead for the win. It was some of the best racing I’ve seen from a UM Varsity,” Carter explained.
The Frosh/Novice Four went to the petite final and competed against Bucknell, George Mason, Temple and two boats from Pittsburgh. The Canes posted a time of 8:36.71, edging out George Mason for a fourth place finish.
“Our Novice Four really stepped up in their first regatta and in a lineup they’d only tried a couple of times before,” added Carter. “I was really pleased with how they handled themselves.”
Next weekend the team travels to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the ACC Championships for the coveted ACC title.
