Women's Golf Set to Host the Hurricane Invitational
March 2, 2012
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami women’s golf team will host its first tournament of the spring season with the Hurricane Invitational from Mon., Mar. 5, through Tues., Mar. 6, at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Coral Gables, Fla.
A total of 16 teams including 10 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 100 are slated to compete as Arkansas State, Boston College, Campbell University, Daytona State, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, Georgia State, James Madison, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Longwood University, Michigan, Ohio State, Oral Roberts, and Princeton join Miami in the two-day tournament.
Competition will begin on Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., followed by a 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
The Hurricanes are led by freshmen Leticia Ras-Anderica, who owns a team-best 74.56 stroke average and enters the tournament in the ACC top 10. Ras-Anderica has averaged a top 10 finish in the past two tournaments, including seventh at the UCF Challenge and earlier this week 12th at the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge.
“I think I’m more than prepared for this tournament. I have been working on my short game and feel very confident with it right now,” said Ras-Anderica.
The veterans on UM’s team have seen growth since last season, especially senior Jennifer Hirano. It helps that UM has practiced at Deering Bay every Friday since the start of the year.
“I feel as if we have practiced hard and that this course is set up for all of us to play well at home,” said senior Jennifer Hirano. “This is a new team so the results are going to be different and hopefully for the better. I feel very confident that we will do better this week.”
In 2010, the tournament was held at Don Shula’s Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla., where the Canes placed 8 th in a field of 17. UCF came on top shooting 894 total (+31).
