Rachel Dupree kicks off Birmingham Invitational for Hurricanes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Hurricanes Track and Field team was in action on Wednesday at the Birmingham Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Only one athlete competed for the Canes, however, as senior Rachel Dupree participated in the pentathlon.
The first of five parts to the pentathlon was the 60-meter hurdles, where Dupree finished second in her section and seventh overall with a time of 9.05 seconds. She continued to excel in the second part of the event as she tied for fifth overall in the high jump after clearing 1.61 meters (5-03.25). The Atlanta, Ga. native continued to give her best effort by throwing for 9.45 meters (31-00.00) in the shot put. Next up was the long jump, where Dupree placed 12th with a jump of 5.04 meters (16-06.50). Lastly, Dupree placed ninth overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35.79.
Overall, Dupree finishes eighth in the women’s pentathlon event with a final score of 3,333 points and gave the Canes a great start heading into the second day of action.
The field events kick off tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with the weight throw, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump and shot put. Highlighting the field events for the Canes are seniors Miranda Wilson and Ashley Holmes in the weight throws and freshman Innocent Jacob in the long jump and high jump.
The running events will also take place throughout the day on Saturday, starting with the unseeded 5K race and continuing with 60m hurdles, 60m dash, mile run, 400m dash, 3000m run, 800m run, 200m dash, and finishing the day with 4x400m relays for men and women. Christian Cook and Darrell Butler will be among the Canes competing in the hurdle events, and Connor Adams, Luke Fontaine and Matthew Wilson will run the mile.
