ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team won its third straight double-overtime game with a 2-1 win over host Navy, Saturday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Sophomore Tara Schwitter converted on a penalty kick in the 101st minute to lift the Canes to a 7-1 on the season. The goal was the Oradell, N.J. native’s fourth of the season, trailing only Kate Howarth (7) for the team lead.

“Wow,” said Miami head coach Tom Anagnost. “All the credit to our women for not only getting it done today, but really being the stronger, more aggressive team at the end. We played two double-overtime games in the last 39 hours and they found a way again. That is a true testament to their character.”

As has been the case all season, Miami’s outstanding freshmen class played great, highlighted by Ashley Flinn, who scored her second goal in as many games in the 11th minute on a left-footed strike into the right side. She was assisted on the play by fellow freshman Shannon Caspar.

Senior Vikki Alonzo also had an outstanding game as well, coming up with multiple clutch saves.

Navy came out very strong getting off five shots in the game’s first nine minutes, but were turned away by Alonzo and the Miami defense.

Once the Canes weathered the Midshipmen’s early acttack, they wasted no time taking the lead on Flinn’s goal.

After Flinn’s early goal the Canes never let up, dominating possession for the rest of the half, including two shots on goal in the last three minutes.

Navy threatened many times in the second half, however it scored its lone goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute off the foot of Fallon Puppolo.

After a quick and uneventful first overtime, the Canes drew a foul of their own in the box in the 101st minute. Schwitter stepped up to the spot and coolly drilled the penalty shot into the back of the net for Miami’s seventh consecutive win.

The University of Miami is also excited to offer a new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events in the 2011 season.  The Family plan provides a family of five with over 20 events for the incredible price of $50.
