PROVO, Utah – In her third career collegiate match, freshman Hannah Moehling scored a second-half goal to give the visiting University of Miami women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over BYU at South Field on Friday night.

Despite being outshot 15-9 by the Cougars, the Hurricanes took advantage of their second-half opportunity when Moehling scored in the 72nd minute on an unassisted effort from just outside the 18-yard box.

“Today was the biggest day thus far for our program,” said head coach Tom Anagnost. “We overcame a hostile environment and a lot of adversity tonight.

“It was an amazing atmosphere and we persevered against a very athletic, fit, physical and seasoned team. Again, I am very proud of our women.”

The crowd of 4,633 fans was the second-most in the BYU’s history at South Field and the win for UM snapped the Cougars 10-game unbeaten-streak, dating back to the 2009 season.

The Canes didn’t record a shot on goal in the first half, but were able to place five on the keeper in the second period.

Senior goalkeeper Vikkie Alonzo was a part of Miami’s second shutout of the season, extending her school record to 25 career shutouts.

Moehling and Nasser led all UM players with two shots apiece, while BYU’s (1-1-1) Colette Jepson fired off a game-high five shots.

Miami will next face Utah Valley on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Orem, Utah. The Wolverines will be facing an ACC team for the first time in program history. Utah Valley (1-2) played host to Wyoming on Friday, falling 2-0 to the Cowboys.

UM returns to Cobb Stadium on Sept. 4 when it faces Duquesne at 1 p.m.

The Hurricanes new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events during the 2011 season is still being offered.  The Family Plan provides a family of five with more than 20 events for the incredible price of $50.  Purchase a Volleyball and Soccer Family Plan by calling 1-800-Go Canes or buy online.
