Canes Conclude Second Session of First Two-a-Day Practice

August 8, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami football team held its first two-a-day football practice of the fall camp on Thursday at Greentree Practice Field. The team concluded practice at Cobb Stadium in preparation for the first scrimmage of fall camp on Sunday afternoon.

After warmer weather and clouds in the morning session, Thursday evening’s practice featured cooler South Florida weather with temperatures in the low-80s and a light breeze amongst mostly cloudy skies. Rain sprinkles entered the Coral Gables area during the latter half of practice. The team worked out in shells Thursday evening with shoulder pads, helmets and shorts.

NIGHT ON THE PITCH
The Canes held their first practice on the Cobb Stadium surface in preparation for Sunday’s scrimmage at Cobb Stadium. The team performed several 11-on-11 drills and ran through some offensive and defensive sets to get accustomed to the playing surface.

DEFENSE SETS THE TONE
In early work Thursday evening, the defense was the highlight of practice. In 7-on-7 drills, the defense went 3-0 to start the five-play series against the offense.

OFFENSIVE LINE MAKES IT MARK
During late practice work, the offensive line opened up several holes for running backs Lamar Miller and Mike James. The offensive line also played a key role in a deep 60-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Morris to Phillip Dorsett.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF DEFENSE
Members of the Hurricanes strength and conditioning staff, as well as defensive backs coach Paul Williams, took part in trying to stop several football players from scoring on “penalty kicks” into the soccer net.
