CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Hurricanes will be one of four women’s basketball teams that will compete in the 2011 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout November 22-23.

Joining the Hurricanes in this year’s tournament will be the USF Bulls from the BIG EAST Conference as well as a team yet to be announced. UAA will also compete and will serve as the host of the shootout for the 34th consecutive season.

Miami will be making its third appearance in the event, but first since 1987 – when it finished the tournament in fourth place. The Canes also placed eighth in 1984.

Senior forward Sylvia Bullock will be returning home to compete in the shootout. The Anchorage native is the sister of UAA’s all-time leading scorer Peter Bullock (2000-04).

“I’m really excited to head back home to play in Alaska,” said Bullock. “It was a childhood dream to win the Shootout and I was an avid spectator.

“The tournament was definitely one of the biggest events to my family as my sister Beatrice won with her University of Iowa Hawkeyes and my brother Peter also made a great impact at UAA Seawolf. My Mother has not seen me play in person since my senior year of high school, so this a big deal for us.

“I can’t wait to win my hometown tournament.”

The Hurricanes are coming off their best season in nearly two decades in 2010-11. They finished the season 28-5 and were 12-2 in ACC play, claiming the first regular season conference title since joining the league in 2004. The Canes advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993, and Katie Meier was named both the Associated Press National and ACC Coach of the Year.
