Weather Shortens Practice for the Students and Staff

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A morning of balmy temperatures gave way to an afternoon of cloud cover, lightning sirens and eventually thunderstorms as the Hurricanes’ seventh spring practice was cut short Tuesday on the Greentree Practice Fields.

Less than an hour into drills, the university’s emergency preparedness system signaled that lighting was detected in the area at 2:55 p.m., immediately ceasing all outdoor activities.

Working for the Weekend
Before the postponement however, the `Canes spent the better part of 45 minutes running through their typical drills in preparation for this Saturday’s spring scrimmage to be held at Spanish River Community High School in Boca Raton.

Addressing the media before practice, head coach Al Golden spoke of this weekend’s scrimmage as “the culmination of our body of work” and noted that his players need to eliminate mental errors and “think on their toes” in between now and the start of the 2011 season.

When asked if any additional changes to the UM depth chart could be expected following the scrimmage, Golden said that fans will “probably see some changes after Saturday,” noting that the first of three spring games will “mean a lot.”

What Got In
From what little practice actually took place, it was clear that the coaching staff is hard at work developing the team’s new talent. Freshman defensive back Thomas Finnie’s speed was used off the corner during field goal drills, while freshman linebacker Akil Craig blocked two field goal attempts during the same exercise.

Of course, the additional company may have had something to do with the increased intensity from the coaches and players, as approximately 100 UM students attended the practice per Golden’s invitation earlier this week.

By and large, the students and staff seemed pleased with their first taste of the Golden Era, even with the action getting cut short. Click HERE for reaction from students at today’s practice.

Welcome Back
With Tuesday’s practice getting cut short due to weather, head coach Al Golden would like to invite current UM students and employees back to Thursday’s practice. The session, which will mark the Hurricanes’ seventh of the spring, will begin at 2:15 p.m. at the Greentree Practice Fields and is expected to last approximately three hours.

UM students and employees that plan on attend on Thursday need to bring a valid `Cane Card for admission. No video cameras will be allowed.
