Shenise Johnson Gets ACC Honor After Hurricanes' Big Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami junior guard Shenise Johnson earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor as announced by the conference office on Monday. The weekly honor is the sixth for a Hurricane player this season.

It is the second time this season and the fourth time in her career that Johnson has been named the ACC Player of the Week. Teammate Riquna Williams has been awarded the honor on four occasions already this season. No other ACC team has more than two weekly award winners.

Johnson led the Hurricanes to a 2-0 record this past week, with a home win over No.1 2/11 Maryland and a big road win at No. 13/10 North Carolina. It marks the first time in the program’s 39-year history that Miami has defeated ranked teams in back-to-back games.

On Feb. 10 against Maryland, Johnson tied her season-high with 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including a career-high tying four three-point field goals. At North Carolina, the Henrietta, N.Y. native posted 16 points, missing only three of her nine shots from the floor.

Johnson is the only player in the ACC to rank in the Top 10 in points (2nd, 19.3 ppg), rebounds (9th, 7.6 rpg) and assists (10th, 3.4 apg). She also leads the conference and is third in the nation with 3.3 steals per game.

The ACC’s weekly accolades are voted on by the league’s “Blue Ribbon Panel,” which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panelists will also vote on the league’s postseason All-Conference teams for the 2010-11 season.

Miami is 22-3 and tied for second place in the conference with an 8-2 record. The Hurricanes head to the Northeast to face Boston College on Thursday at 7 p.m. The `Canes won the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 16, 65-53, behind a season-high 33 points from Williams and 31 forced turnovers from the defense.
