Monday Pro Canes Report: Graham On Verge Of History

Dec. 19, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Monday Morning ProCanes Report will weed through all the NFL highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most… what the former University of Miami Hurricanes did during the week prior. After an impressive five-touchdown performance last weekend, the Pro Canes tacked on four more Sunday, stretching their new touchdown streak to four consecutive weeks (and 153 of the past 154). While Santana Moss started the day’s action with his fourth touchdown catch of the year, Jimmy Graham inched his way towards NFL history with a dominant performance in a New Orleans win.

Jimmy Graham (New Orleans Saints) – 7 catches, 70 yards, 1 touchdown
The sophomore sensation set another record in his second season with New Orleans, becoming the first tight end in franchise history to record nine touchdowns in a season with an impressive second-quarter endzone grab. He is only 120 yards away from breaking the 31-year old single-season NFL record for yards by a tight end, set by the father of another Pro Cane, Kellen Winsow Sr., with the San Diego Chargers in 1980. Graham, who now ranks fifth in the NFL with 1,171 receiving yards on the season, moved into second place in receptions (87) among all pass-catchers with his seven-catch performance.

Jeremy Shockey (Carolina Panthers) – 2 receptions, 35 yards, 1 touchdown
Though his numbers were by no means eye-popping, Jeremy Shockey extended his own streak to 134 consecutive regular season games played with at least one reception. The tenth-year tight end, who has had at least one catch in every regular season game played in his career, owns the second-longest active streak of any player in the NFL (Tony Gonzalez, 175). With his 35-yard output, Shockey eclipsed last season’s yardage total in Carolina’s 28-13 win over Houston on Sunday.

Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens): 10 total tackles
After missing the past four games of the season to injury, the 36-year old linebacker returned to action on Sunday night for the Ravens. Despite Baltimore’s 34-14 loss to the Chargers, Lewis had his third double-digit tackle performance of the season. The sixteen-year linebacker, who was shaking off the rust in San Diego, led the team with 10 tackles and maintained his team-lead with 78 takedowns on the season. He is currently on his way to his thirteenth career Pro Bowl as the leading vote-getter among inside linebackers in the AFC.

With Week 15 all but in the books, the Pro Canes have a chance to build on their four-touchdown total from Sunday with a Monday Night Football showdown in San Francisco. Frank Gore and the 49ers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers at Candlestick Park, with kickoff set for 8:30 p.m.

Heading into the NFL opening week, UM led all colleges with 42 alums on active NFL Rosters.
