Miami Hits The Water For The Fall Opener
Oct. 30, 2011
Miami vs. Nova Southeastern & Barry (10/29/11)
Miami took to the water today in their first event of the fall season at home against local rivals Nova Southeastern and Barry University. It was many of the girls first rowing event at the collegiate level as Miami is bolstering a large freshman class of almost 30 recruits.
“It was a good day of racing and a great way to tune up for the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Varsity 8+ performed very well and we were pleased with how they rowed.” said Coach Carter.
Miami took down Nova by over a minute in the Varsity 8+ to give Miami it’s first win of the fall season. The Varsity 4+ had five teams racing with Miami showing both it’s varsity and novice squad. The varsity had a valiant effort coming in second just fifteen seconds behind Barry.
Coach Carter seemed pleased with the result, “The Varsity 4+ had a solid piece and was testing yet another lineup as they refined the crew for the Hooch. They’re sure there is more as they move into the next regatta.”
“The Novice crew, which raced among the varsities, encountered some serious problems when they hooked weeds on their fin and had to stop to correct things.” added the second year head coach.
The Novice 8+ ran into some technical problems which ultimately cost them the race.
“The Novice 8+ actually ran into similar problems as their 4+ counterparts and paid the price in their overall time. They’re looking forward to another opportunity next week in Chattanooga.” explained Carter.
The Hurricanes will look to continue their progression next weekend at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn.
