Bartenstein Falls in Tournament Quarterfinals

Nov. 5, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After winning her first two matches in the singles bracket of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, senior Anna Bartenstein came up just short in her quarterfinal match-up with the No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs of Stanford on Friday (4-6, 7-5, 6-3).

Bartenstein, who defeated Aeriel Ellis of Texas in her first match of the day (6-4, 2-6, 6-1), was facing a familiar opponent in Gibbs. The Miami senior had matched up with the Stanford sophomore in the consolation bracket at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in October, where Bartenstein won the match by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Friday’s quarterfinal at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center would begin and end differently for Bartenstein, however, as she started quickly but was unable to finish off her challenger. The Graz, Austria native, ranked #25 in the preseason ITA poll, now boasts a fall record of 20-5. Bartenstein was looking to become the first Hurricane to win the National Indoor Championships since Audra Cohen in 2006.

Bartenstein began the tournament by defeating Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV on Thursday afternoon by scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. On Friday, Bartenstein finished off Ellis in strong fashion, winning the third and final set of the match 6-1. She continued her momentum into her first set in the quarterfinals, but could not hold off the talented Gibbs, ranked No. 7 in the preseason ITA poll.

The final fall tournament for Bartenstein and the rest of the women’s tennis team will be the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic in Bradenton, Fla. from Nov. 11-13.
