Miami Women Picked Seventh in AP Preseason Poll

Oct. 29, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will enter the 2011-12 season as the No. 7 team in the nation as announced by the Associated Press on Saturday. It is the highest ranking for the program since the final poll of the 1992 season, when the Hurricanes were No. 6.

“That’s a really big honor,” Miami coach Katie Meier said. “It’s a moment for us. We’re going to have fun with it. You’re a fool if you don’t take a moment to step away and enjoy it.”

Miami returns every single player from a season ago, including the ACC Preseason Player of the Year Shenise Johnson and fellow Preseason All-ACC Team member Riquna Williams. The 2010-11 season saw the Canes earn a share of the ACC regular season title and earn a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

UM also will see the addition of 6-6 junior transfer Shawnice Wilson and 5-11 freshman guard Suriya McGuire.

The Canes will face six teams that are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll, including No. 3 Tennessee, No. 8 Duke, No. 10 Georgetown, No. 11 Maryland, No. 14 Florida State and No. 20 North Carolina. Miami will play Maryland, Florida State and North Carolina two times each during the regular season.

Miami welcomes Barry University for an exhibition game at the BankUnited Center on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. The regular season gets underway on Nov. 11 when the Canes face Texas-Pan American to Coral Gables at 1 p.m.
