Cross Country Team Ready for Princeton Invitational

Oct. 14, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla.–The University of Miami men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Princeton, N.J. for the Princeton Invitational this Saturday. The women’s 6K will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the men’s 8K will begin at 11:15 a.m. Both races will take place at the West Windsor Fields.

“We’re very excited this week to head up to Princeton for the Princeton Invitational. This is the first time that the Canes have competed in this event,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths.  “This will be a good test for us to run against Ivy League teams. Overall, this is our last tune-up before the ACC Championships later this month. Training continues to go well and we’re looking to have a break-out performance from both sides.”

Sophomores Lindsi Arrington and Brooke Dovell look to lead the women once again. They will be joined in Princeton by fellow sophomore Cristina Brea, junior Allison Ludwick, and seniors Casey Crist and Jennifer Estime.

“On the women’s side we’re looking for Brooke and Lindsi to lead us in their first race at the 6k distance of the year,” added Griffiths. “It’s a benefit for us running a 6k as we prepare for the ACC Championship distance.

On the men’s side, sophomores Connor Adams and Luke Fontaine lead the pack along with junior Greg Kaczka. Joining them in the fourth competition of the season are freshmen Jacee Jarnigan and Anthony Ricketts, sophomores Sean Pezzulo and Philip Wood, and senior Matthew Wilson.

“We’re led by the big three of Luke, Greg and Connor and we’re looking to have an overall team break-out performance against some sturdy competition,” said Griffiths.

Joining the women at the Princeton Invitational will be Columbia, Elizabethtown, Haverford, Iona, Keene State, Monmouth, NJIT, Penn, Princeton, Scranton, St. Joseph’s, Stony Brook, UMBC, and Yale. The men will be competing against the same schools plus Cornell, St. Thomas (Minn.), and Widener.

“There are a lot of regionally and nationally ranked teams in the field. This also prepares us well for the conditions we’ll be facing at the championships in Clemson. We don’t see cooler climates here in South Florida, so going to a venue with comparable conditions helps as well as having top-level competition,” stated Griffiths.
