Sept. 23, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete in the 23rd Annual Mountain Dew Invitational this Saturday in Gainesville. The men’s 8K starts at 8 a.m., while the women will run their 5K at 8:30 a.m. Both races will take place at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
“This will be the toughest test for us this season so far, with several teams that are nationally and regionally ranked,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths. “Florida, North Carolina and Michigan on the men’s side and add South Florida and Jacksonville in the women’s race”.
Sophomore Luke Fontaine and junior Greg Kaczka will be leading the men in their third competition of the season. Also running for the men are freshmen JaCee Jarnigen and Anthony Ricketts, sophomores Connor Adams, Sean Pezzulo, and Philip Wood and senior Matthew Wilson.
“I am expecting a big race from the men’s team,” added Griffiths. “The lead pack of Fontaine, Kaczka and Adams is the best we have had here at Miami for a while. This is a chance to mix it up with some very strong teams.”
On the women’s side, sophomores Lindsi Arrington and Brooke Dovell look to continue their recent success. The duo will be joined by freshmen Julia Koch and Sara Ryan, sophomore Cristina Brea, junior Allison Ludwick, and seniors Casey Crist and Jennifer Estime.
“I would like to get a stronger race out of the second pack of women. I know that Brooke and Lindsi will be strong, the key to us improving as a team will be closing the gap to runner number five,” said Griffiths.
Joining Miami in Gainesville will be Bethune-Cookman, Embry-Riddle, Flagler, UF, FAU, FGCU, FIU, Jacksonville, Johnson & Wales, Michigan, North Carolina, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, Pasco-Hernando CC, Rollins, Saint Leo, Sebastian River, USF, St. Petersburg, Stetson, UCF, Warner, and West Florida.
