Canes Excited for Mary Fossum Invitational

Coral Gables, Fla.- The University of Miami women’s golf team travels to East Lansing, Michigan this weekend to compete in the Mary Fossum Invitational.
The Canes are competing with 10 other teams, including Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State and host Michigan State. Michigan State has won the tournament six of the past eight years but the Canes look to change that.
The tournament begins with a shotgun start Saturday at 9 a.m., where the teams will play 36 holes.The tournament continues on Sunday where the teams will complete the final 18 holes.
“The girls like the course and are excited to tee it up again,” said UM head women’s golf coach Patti Rizzo. “They are hitting the ball well and like the greens.”
The Canes had an impressive final round at the Cougar Classic this past weekend, shooting a 292 for the first time since the 2010 spring season.
The five Canes making the trip this weekend are seniors Jennifer Hirano and Patricia Arana, and freshmen Leticia Ras-Anderica, Rika Park, and Shannon Pak.
Hirano had success this past weekend finishing +6 including an even-par 72 on the final day. Arana shot +12 for the tournament and finished the final round of the Cougar Classic with a two-over 74.
Coach Rizzo is extremely excited about the play of freshmen Rika Park and Leticia Ras-Anderica. In their first college tournament this past weekend, Ras-Anderica registered a +6 and Park a +9.
“I think the freshman did great for their first college event,” said Rizzo. “Rika and Leticia are going to be amazing by the time they are seniors.”
