Camp Report: Visit From UM Legend Highlights Friday's Practice

Sapp

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-With another two-a-day and the team’s first scrimmage looming this weekend, the Hurricanes wrapped up their first week of camp Friday with a standard morning practice on the Greentree Practice Fields.

Miami continued to work in more team drills, including red zone and full 11-on-11 periods.

The heat index returned to triple-digits on Friday after the last few days had been a little cooler. Temperatures by the end of the session were in the upper 80’s.

SAPP RETURNS TO GREENTREE
Hurricane great Warren Sapp made it out to Greentree Friday morning to take in his first UM practice this fall. The former NFL star spent some time with head coach Al Goldenand then addressed the student-athletes for a few minutes before the session got underway.

SAINTS ALSO IN ATTENDANCE
The New Orleans Saints made their first appearance at Canes Camp on Friday, marking the eighth NFL team to have assigned scouts to Greentree over the last five days.

FRIDAY – Saints
THURSDAY – Vikings, Raiders
WEDNESDAY – Buccaneers
TUESDAY – Panthers, Jaguars
MONDAY – Chiefs, Panthers, Jaguars

HIGH PERFORMANCE PLAYERS
Throughout camp, HurricaneSports.com will highlight some of the best performers in each day’s practice. While there are certainly other players who stood out throughout the course of the session, these student-athletes in particular caught our eye.

Offense
TE Dyron Dye – After a switch from defensive line to tight end, Dye practiced well in only his second day with the offense. The sophomore, who played tight end in high school, made an incredible diving catch on a pass from Jacory Harrisand blocked well for the running backs on day seven.

TE Asante Cleveland – Cleveland, another sophomore tight end, was a big factor blocking and in the passing game on Friday. The 6-5 tight end, who finished fifth on the team in receiving yards in 2010, was a consistent target for both Harris and Stephen Morris.

Defense
DT Darius Smith– The junior defensive lineman used all 350-plus pounds of his enormous frame to shut down numerous running plays on day seven. Smith performed particularly well in a short yardage drill, often times dominating the competition on the offensive line.

DB Andrew Swasey – The junior safety stood out with his coverage skills on Friday, breaking up a pass intended for receiver Tommy Streeterand displaying quickness at the safety position. Swasey was a clear vocal leader for the defense, demonstrating his ability to recognize coverage and help out the other defensive backs.

REVISITING BEHIND THE FACEMASK
Throughout camp, we will revisit some of our favorite Behind the Facemask stories that have been running throughout the summer. Today, we’ll take a look back at Brandon Linder’sstory…

“I hold myself to such a high level, that even when I make a good play, if I don’t think it’s a good enough play for me, I get upset at myself. I critique the littlest things, so I’m disappointed with myself even after some good plays.”

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
On Thursday, Canes All-Access released this behind the scenes camp story with senior defensive tackle Marcus Forston. It’s well worth your time if you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet….
