ORLANDO — The Miami Hurricanes’ young team added more experience to its collective resume as they raced in-state rivals UCF and Jacksonville at the UCF Regatta held at Lake Pickett in Orlando. Miami’s Novice V8 crew raced to a first-place finish in a time of 7:01.7.

“The racing went pretty well today and continued the trend of steady improvement for our program,” said head coach Andrew Carter. “I think all of our crews had success implementing some of the things we had planned and the outcomes were better as compared to a year ago against this always solid UCF team.”

Today’s regatta opened with the Varsity 8+ race where Miami finished 9.7 seconds behind the UCF “A” crew for second place. The Canes bested the third-place UCF “B” crew by one second.

The highlight of the day came when the Novice V8 crew sprinted to a first-place finish.

“I was happy that our freshman 8+ won their event, but what was really key was the manner in which they did,” said Carter. “We worked this past week on a few things and they really put them into practice during their race. I was really proud of this young group today.”

Miami’s Novice 4+ finished third in its race in a time of 8:58.0. The Varsity 4+ saw the UM “A” crew finish second, crossing the finish in 7:43.7.

“Our top 4+ (doubling out of the 1V8+ along with our other V4+) also performed really well in their second race of the day,” said Carter. “I thought they rowed a very spirited race that showed that they took to heart some of the key tasks I had given them in the past week. While they were second in the four-boat race, there was a lot to be pleased about in there.”

The Canes “B” team finished fourth in the V4+ (8:02.7).

Miami will have a couple of weeks to prepare for what will be some of the toughest racing of the season at Oak Ridge, Tenn. on May 15.

“We’ll be working to maintain the trend of steady improvement with this young squad during that time,” said Carter.
