Canes Host Final Home Meet of the 2011 Season

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami will hold its final home meet of the 2011 outdoor season as it will host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational this Saturday, April 16 at Cobb Stadium.
Among the participating schools are BIG EAST competitors Connecticut and Villanova, Southeastern Conference powerhouse LSU and fellow Sunshine State teams Bethune-Cookman FAU, Florida Gulf Coast and FIU.
For 10 UM seniors, the meet will mark not their final home meet as a Hurricane.
Sprinter Patrick Blackie is the only graduating senior that will compete for the men, while distance runner Charles Michel, though not competing, will be honored as a member of the Canes’ senior class.
Senior women competitors will include hurdler Ti’erra Brown – a five-time All-America selection – sprinters Ashley Dukes, Charlene Fuller and Takecia Jameson, jumper Megan Novinger and distance runners Emma Steppe and Katharine Woodard. Caitlin Knapp will not participate but be honored along with the rest of the graduating seniors.
The Hurricane women enter the contest ranked No. 21 (92.91 points) in the nation according to the USTFCCCA poll. Notable individual performers include Brown, whose April 1st time of 56.91 in the women’s 400m hurdles ranks first in the ACC this season.
Dukes also ranks among the ACC’s best as her March 18th time of 23.96 in the women’s 200m dash currently ranks third in the conference.
For the men, junior Devon Hill will look to best his ACC third-place 100m hurdles time of 14.12 as he takes to the track at 4:55 p.m.
Currently 20 Hurricane teams or individuals hold times/marks in the ACC’s Top 10.
Field events are set to begin at 11 a.m. with women’s javelin and men’s hammer throw. Track events will start at 4 p.m. with women’s 4x100m relay.
The meet marks the Hurricanes’ final before the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships in Durham, N.C. from April 21-23.
Former UM 800m All-America honoree Ronald Thorne and friend of the university Ralph Lewis will be honored with a memorial moment of silence before the running events at 4 p.m.
Tickets will be available for sale at the Cobb Stadium gate at $5 for adults and $3 for children.
