Katie Meier Earns RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Region 2 Honor

March 28, 2011

ATLANTA – University of Miami head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier has been named the 2011 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Region 2 Division I Coach of the Year, as announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

“I am very humbled to be named a WBCA All-Region coach,” said Meier. “It means so much to me because it is voted on by my peers in the coaching profession.”

Meier has led her Miami Hurricanes through the ultimate turnaround — from finishing 12th in the league one season ago, despite making to the Women’s NIT Championship game, all the way to sharing the league’s regular season crown this season.

Meier guided the ‘Canes to 28-5 overall record and a 12-2 ACC mark, tying with Duke as regular season champions. The regular season title is the first for the Miami program and the No. 2 seed in the 2011 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament is the team’s highest seed in school history since joining the league in 2004-05.

“This honor is really a testament to our team and more importantly our staff,” added Meier. “It was a remarkable season for Miami and I’m very proud to have been a part of it.”

Meier, who is in her sixth season at the helm of the Hurricanes, became just the third coach in program history to reach the 100 wins milestone. That historic win also happened to be the ‘Canes first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1993, as UM defeated Gardner-Webb 80-62 in the tourney’s first round. The NCAA Tournament appearance was the first for Miami since 2004.

Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer was named the 2011 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Collegiate Athletic Association Divison I Coach of the Year.
