MIAMI BEACH, FLA.— The University of Miami rowing team concluded its preseason scrimmage schedule against Connecticut on Saturday on Indian Creek in Miami Beach, Fla. The race was UM’s final tune-up before opening the 2011 season against Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. on April 2.

The Varsity race pitted the ‘Canes against both the 1V and 2V crews from UConn. The UConn 2V crew had a clean race, both the 1V crews faced their share of adversity. The Miami crew raced with a silent coxswain as Maria Siemann’s sound system malfunctioned. Miami faced more adversity as one of the footboards in the ‘Canes boat came loose causing Courtney Keller to have to race almost the entire course with her shoes moving up and down. On the UConn side, the Huskies’ 1V struck the 1,000-meter course marker which caused a disruption in their rhythm. Both crews handled the challenges well, but these issues, combined with a biting headwind, made for a slow course.

“I’m very pleased with our crew’s response to their situations,” said Miami head coach Andrew Carter. “I’m willing to bet Coach Sanford-Wendry from UConn would say the same about how quickly her crew bounced back to strike up their rhythm.”

The headwind had strengthened by the time the Novice 8+ started, but both crews handled the conditions well. The Huskies jumped out to an early lead but the ‘Canes worked back into them in the second 500 meters. The lead changed hands at the 750-meter mark of the race and Miami stretched its new margin to nearly 13 seconds by the finish.

The Novice 4+ race stayed very close through the first 500 meters. The UConn crew gradually pulled away in the middle 1,000 meters and sat with a comfortable margin as the crews entered the final stretch. The Miami 4+ made a good push as they entered the final 200 meters, but it was not enough and the Huskies finished with a composed 4.5-second win.
