Swoope & Thomas Named to ACC All-Academic Team

March 9, 2011

CORAL GABLES, FLA. – TheUniversity of Miami’s Adrian Thomas and Erik Swoope were named to the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

The Miami duo was among a group of 13 men’s basketball players to earn the recognition this season, requiring a student-athlete to earn a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.

Miami places multiple players on the All-Academic Team for the third time and is among just three schools with more than one representative on the team – joining Duke (3) and Virginia (2). Ten Hurricanes have earned ACC All-Academic Team recognition since 2006, and Miami trails only Duke, who has had 12 players named to the academic team over that span.

This is the second ACC All-Academic Team honor for Thomas, who previously earned the nod as a freshman in 2005-06. The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native is in his second year of graduate school and has emerged as one of the league’s top three-point threats since suffering back-to-back season-ending injuries. He led the ACC in three-point field goal percentage last season (.421), and this year is second in the conference in three-pointers per game (2.6) and seventh in three-point percentage (.399).

Thomas graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in business management and marketing and is on track to earn his masters degree in sports administration this spring.

Swoope is among three freshmen on this year’s All-Academic squad. A 2010 graduate of prestigious Harvard-Westlake High School, the Southern California native has played in 25 games for the Hurricanes this season, making nine starts. He is majoring in business.

“Both Adrian and Erik have done a tremendous job in the classroom,” said Kelly Pierce, athletic academic advisor to Miami’s men’s basketball team. “With it being Adrian’s last year here, he is continuing to leave a mark in both in basketball and academics, and earned a 4.0 last semester in graduate school. Erik brings the same intensity to both his efforts in the classroom and on the court. I think this is just the beginning of many academic achievements for him.”

Joining Swoope and Thomas on the All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball Team is John Cahill (Sr., Boston College), Luke Loucks (Jr., Florida State), Ryan Kelly (So., Duke), Mason Plumlee (So., Duke), Tyrone Garland (Fr., Virginia Tech), Will Regan (Fr., Virginia), Will Sherrill (Sr., Virginia), Kyle Singler (Sr., Duke), Tanner Smith (Jr., Clemson), Mfon Udofia (So., Georgia Tech) and Tyler Zeller (Jr., North Carolina).
