Jan. 13, 2011
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Miami’s Ti’erra Brown has been named to The Bowerman Preseason Watch List, as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday . The Bowerman Award recognizes the top male and female athletes in NCAA Track and Field.
“Ti’erra has worked extremely hard to get where she is today,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “To be recognized for The Bowerman is a tremendous honor for her as an individual and for Miami as a program.”
The 2010 women’s winner of The Bowerman, Queen Harrison was the first female in NCAA Division I history to sweep national tiles in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Brown could be the early favorite to be the second.
The Hampton, Va. native was national runner-up in both events last year. Brown sent a call to action after running a then-world leading 54.74 in the NCAA’s 400 hurdle quarterfinals – the time would stand as the 13th best in the world in 2010.
Over the summer, Brown, along with a NACAC title, would win each round on the way to a USATF 400-meter hurdle title where she put more than a full second ahead of the rest of the field in the final.
Brown has earned five All-America honors in her career and holds the school record in both the 60m (8.00) and 400m hurdles (54.74).
Ashton Purvis was the only freshman to be named to the honorable mention list.
The nation’s top high school sprinter in 2010 was named the Track and Field News High School Athlete of the Year and the 2009-10 ESPN RISE DyeStat Girls Athlete of the Year as she claimed the country’s best 200m dash time at 22.90 seconds.
The Hurricanes open their 2011 indoor season on Saturday with the Clemson Challenge, a quad meet that will also feature Auburn and Georgia.
